The new Clifford Still museum in Denver. Beautiful. Fascinating that in his late works he left so much of the canvas untouched. If you look closely in this black and white painting there' a streak of bright blue along the lower right edge, brilliant! We in Denver are lucky.

Stage 1: Underpainting

Here are the stages of my bison painting over the course of five weeks.

A critique from my teacher Lisa: Love the light, muted washy tones of her underpainting. This is such a great example of an underpainting.

Stage 2: Middle Phase

Then,she adds more layers, some more pure color, thicker paint to the piece and itbegins to come alive. Again, just enough for the "middle phase" ofthe painting process. I can't wait to see this week's iteration.

Stage 3: Final Touches

Viola! I'm done adding the finishing touches.

This museum houses a permanent display of mid-century designer Alexander Girard's personal 100,000 piece collection of folk art pieces. It's an unforgettable exhibit and every time we visit Santa, Fe it's a must see. This trip we had the added bonus of seeing Folk Art of the Andes. The boys were inspired and plopped themselves down to draw, broken collar bone and all.

I completed my sketchbook and dropped it in the mail, forty pages in 60 days. Whew. I only wish I'd picked one style and ran with it instead of experimenting so much. I feel as though I did treat it as a sketchbook and got my hands dirty which means it ain't all pretty.

Here's the skinny:

We enjoyed the show Orphan Paintings at MCA Denver today. A series of unauthenticated works thought to be avant-garde masterpieces from 1910-1920s Russia's Constructivism movement. Either way, a beautiful collection of paintings.

Pencil Illustration

In the early 90s I worked for four years as an illustrator at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. There were six of us working in the upstairs of an old building furnished with nothing more than a couple of tables, folding chairs and our little Mac SE's which at the time were top of the line. We'd spend our days listening to the radio and shootin' the breeze while we drew. I remember as the newbie my boss had given me an 8 ft. long schematic to draw on that 9" monitor. The Air Force took good care of us, throwing parties in the hanger across the street which now houses the Big Bear Ice Arena. Thinking back that was one of my more enjoyable jobs.

What my sister brings when she visits, not only pounds and pounds of ginourmous shrimp that she caught herself but Smoked Salmon Vodka. The Alaskan Distillery said it took 48 tries to get this one right. It's intended use is in a Chipotle Bloody Mary. I'd pick it up off the shelves just for it's pretty label.

Denny Dent (1948-2004) Retrospective is currently on show at the Arvada Center thru Aug. 29. Today while watching the videos of him painting his ginourmous 6 ft. canvas' to music my kids were in awe. I was fortunate to see him perform live a couple of times at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in the early 90s. This show was one I found I didn't want to leave.
