Typography

Typography is not a science. Typography is an art.
I recently read that in this age of digital design the artform of hand lettering is coming back in a big way in advertising, children's books, magazines, packaging design, etc.
Hand lettering is liberating and offers a more human dimension.
I can appreciate them both.

Doodling
I have to admit I do a lot of doodling while on the phone. Turns out doodling is a good thing for the brain, it's the sign of an alert mind.Doodling is the expression of a wandering mind and new research is suggesting that a wandering mind may be a good thing for humanity. A wandering mind appears to be a time when our brains are not 'doing' but rather 'being' and in that state (called a default brain state) we seem to increase in self-awareness.

Closeup Experimentation

I took closeup photos, about 6" away, from a painting I'm working on. My painting isn't a landscape, however I like this small section of color that looks like one. I added another portion of the painting on top of that image which leads me to an idea for a future painting. I like it when that happens unexpectedly.

Product Love
I'm diggin' the new LOVE stamp from the US Postal Service, available May 8 nationwide. The King and Queen each get their own stamp. Designed by artist Jeanne Greco of NY.Saturday, May 9, 2009
Juxtaposed
I think some of my favorite collage designs are those that I create with Architecture. This design consists of eight layers. I love the Tuscan Bar (whose window opens up view to a seated patron inside) in the foreground set against modern architecture.

The Art of Handwriting

A handwritten note from my dad.
August 30, 1932 - May 4, 2003.
Illustrated letters are inspired communications. They have the power to transport the reader to another place and time - to recreate the sights, sounds, attitudes, and imagination of their author. - "More Than Words, Illustrated Letters", Liza Kirwin
My dad was a writer. A gardener. An avid reader. A soccer coach. A cook. A "black Irishman", who had dark hair & tanned. He had long legs and long fingers. An artistic lefty. I cherish his handwritten recipes and gardening tips. I only wish I had one of his many sketches that he created at the dinner table on a napkin.
